It is absolutely no secret that film photography is back and better than ever. Though some may think this is a “trend” ready to exit stage right after a few wedding seasons, I fully believe film is around for the long haul. That is why it is a great investment. It truly is the most authentic way to capture moments as they happen, no post editing, no fluff. Just real raw, authenticity and emotion.
I began my photography journey in 2012 but started to explore film in 2016 when I was in college. I signed up for my first film photography class for fun not knowing it would jump start my deep love for film. In class, we were not only taught the process of shooting film but learned everything from exposure all the way to drying a fully developed print. The process is extensive but was taught that their is so much love and care put into film photography. I knew this was something I would love for the rest of my life.
If you are on the fence about film photography, here are five fantastic reasons why it’s an investment you won’t regret.
1. The look and feel of film photography can’t be duplicated.
As much as digital photogs claim to have a “filmy” editing style, it is truly something that can’t be duped. The grain, the color tones, the effortless feel, it is one of a kind.
2. Film photography is an art and a skill.
Shooting with a manual film camera isn’t for the faint of hearted. Film photography and how to execute the shot you want takes time and skill to perfect. The lighting scenario, the type of film you are shooting with, and what settings to use are all skills I have practiced so I can confidently execute my shots, turning them into your art.
3. Delayed gratification.
There is not many better feelings than getting film photos back from development. You can never fully predict or anticipate how special these are. I am always surprised when I get a gallery back. Film photos sometimes don’t turn out as planned, but that is the beauty in it. Every image is artfully unique.
4. A unique add on to any shoot.
Film photography isn’t for just weddings. It is a great way to set your shoot a part whether its for your business, personal brand, maternity pictures or anything in between. People will remember the film shots, whether its wedding guests, or business web traffic, film certainly makes a splash!
5. It’s timeless.
Whether you think film is a trend or not, you can’t deny it’s been around for a long time. We’ve all looked back at old film photos from when we were children and smiled big. Film photos turn into some of the longest most cherished memories to look back on. Don’t miss out on including it for your next shoot, you might regret it.
